Courtney Valmore doesn’t just take pride in what she’s done to help others. She also shows an indelible passion for continuing to help change the world around her for the better, now and in the future. The path she’s chosen is not just a career. To her, it is a mission.

Courtney has already been working to make a difference in the lives of the people in her local community for several years. Now, her dream is to combine her desire to help with her love of science to solve problems and make a difference on a global level.

Courtney has dedicated much of her free time over the past few years not just volunteering, but creating and organizing volunteer efforts in Indianapolis to help the people in her church as well as the community around her. Through LifeJourney, a church located in downtown Indianapolis,  she has worked to make a real difference in the lives of people who are struggling both spiritually and physically.

Wanting to share the feelings of openness and welcoming that she experienced at the church, she helped to create a weekly youth group within the church to encourage the city’s youth to come inside. She’s also worked as a nursery caretaker and has led the church’s children’s worship service.

An example that perhaps most embodies her ambitions is her volunteer work managing LifeJourney’s community service program, “Lunch Love”. In her own words, “Lunch Love is a way to bring together children, adults, and the homeless.” Church members put together brown bag lunches consisting of sandwiches, drinks, and snacks and then personally distribute them to the homeless in the community.

The Lunch Love program not only brings food to people in need, but the volunteers also share an open mind, a caring ear to listen to their stories, and the vital message that they have not been forgotten.

Most recently, Courtney has taken on a role on the church’s marketing and communications committee. She is working to help the church achieve a more modern image and engage better with young people through various social media channels.

Now, currently attending the Rose-Hulman Institute Of Technology, Courtney is turning her attention and her ambitions to solving problems that affect the global community.  She is working toward an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering and planning to follow up with a graduate degree in environmental engineering.

Highest on her list of future contributions is dealing with the problems presented by the combination of global warming and fresh drinking water shortages throughout the world.

“I want to find improved ways of converting ocean water into safe drinking water for those in need of fresh drinking water. With ocean levels rising, we could potentially solve two problems at once with the new technology in desalination; eliminating flooding and putting water into areas in developing countries that have limited amounts of, or no access to, fresh drinking water. Not only would this help with climate change, but also water shortages as a result of overpopulation,” she wrote on her application for the Give Back Scholarship.

We are proud to announce that Courtney Valmore has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship and that LifeJourney will also receive a $500 donation to help them continue with their work.

The Give Back Scholarship is an annual scholarship offered to students in Indiana who are actively engaged in community work. The scholarship is unique in that both the student applicant and the non-profit they volunteer for are rewarded.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and submit an essay that describes both their experience working as a volunteer and how that work has impacted their values and pursuit of higher education.

The Give Back Scholarship program is important to everyone at Doehrman Buba Ring. It represents just one of the ways we work to give something back to the community.
